It’s more than just a fresh coat of paint on the walls and new sheets on the bed. It’s a given that every operating motel will be clean and to a degree, comfortable. However, the hospitality accommodation industry is changing. It started a number of years ago, when smaller hotels were redesigned to become exciting alternatives to the larger corporate hotels.
Their redesign was based on providing their guests with a unique experience, that they wouldn’t get at the larger properties. These “boutique hotels” created interesting environments that were unique to their building style, history and location and even if it was a small hotel chain, the cookie-cutter approach still wasn’t adopted.
From the general success of the “boutique hotel” concept came the idea to reposition the roadside motel. This started in America naturally, by individuals who saw the possibility that by offering a unique accommodation experience to guests, they could better compete with hotels, resorts and B&B’s etc, and even charge a higher room rate which covered much of the upgrading cost. Because this concept was so successful, it caught on very quickly.
Soon re -imagined motels were springing up in many locations around America. To a much lessor degree the trend is now also being successfully adopted in Australia.
