TOMORROW'S FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS & CAFES

ITS NO SURPRISE THAT THE FAST FOOD INDUSTRY IS CHANGING

and in many ways, this is as much due to the rapid advancement in technology and to the new general awareness of  healthy eating and a public awareness of a more refined interior environment, because of the better quality commercial interiors that are currently being created.

The “cookie cutter ” traditional design of restaurants and cafes, has also given way to a more contemporary and environmentally friendly establishment that is more acceptable to adults, as well as the young adult customers of today.

More plants and possibly live greenery where appropriate, will be incorporated into the designs, that could introduce a feeling of wellbeing and calmness into the environment and more natural materials and finishes will be introduced into the design of the interior - stepping away from the loud colours and plastic finishes of the previous identities.

Lighting, which plays a pivotal role in any interior design will also be rethought, with the new lighting direction being more indirect and giving the feeling of exclusivity and calmness.

New builds will have more windows, not only to allow in more daylight, but to also have a relationship with the world outside, much in the same way that many regular cafes have outdoor footpath seating, to better expose the restaurant to passers by and give the patrons the feeling of connection.

Digital ordering stations ( touchscreen kiosks ) are already being installed in some fast food outlets and are mainly intended for customers, who prefer to take away their meal. Customers eating in the store can still order their meal in the traditional way from the counter (personal connection), and naturally, it can now also be ordered for home delivery with Uber Eats etc, and paid for with an app.

Touchscreen kiosks may also provide the opportunity to decrease the number of tables and seats required in the restaurant, if the service has indeed become quicker and take away patrons are encouraged to use the digital service and possibly sit and wait, in a dedicated area.

Whether you want to grab a burger “on-the-go” from a drive-through, have fast food delivered to your door, or sit down in a restaurant and have your meal served to your table, these may very soon be the choices offered to you.

In many respects, because of the consumers health awareness that is transforming the Fast Food industry, the fast food restaurants and cafes of tomorrow will become lifestyle cafes, offering fast casual healthy dining.

This transition may take time, as the serving of a casual healthy meal may not be as quick as a “burger with fries” -  and speed of service is one of the main features of the fast food experience that most customers - especially young people, don’t want to lose. So, possibly both methods of service should initially be provided to avoid an abrupt change,

Another consideration that must be given in the design of tomorrow’s fast food restaurant or cafe, is that young people look for a place to meet and socialise, and the interior planning should take this - as well as the birthday parties that already happen in many establishments - into account.

Fast food will be with us forever - however, like most things it will change and evolve, in keeping with our technology, social evolution and health consciousness, as will the restaurants that serve it.
